What is Therapy for Moms and What to Expect?
Becoming a mom changes your life, and people around you say to enjoy every moment – but that’s not realistic. So much of motherhood is cleaning messes, coping with sleepless nights, and being pulled into many directions at once. It is ok to feel stressed about being a mom and admit that you feel like running away some days.
As a mom, I know navigating the challenges of motherhood is one of the most demanding roles. As a mom yourself, you may often wonder, “How can being a mother create feelings of anxiety or depression?” Motherhood-centered therapy addresses the vast responsibilities you face as a mom—whether managing the sleepless nights of caring for a newborn, balancing the complexities of raising children, or coping with work-life stress. Trust me, I’ve been there many times myself!
During our sessions, you’ll have the space to openly discuss your journey, including how to deal with depression as a mom, how to manage anxiety, and how to confront the feelings that come with this life-changing role. The goal of our sessions together will be to guide you through therapeutic techniques that provide coping strategies for daily stressors, such as how to deal with mom anxiety or depression whether as a single or co-parent.
Some common reasons moms come to therapy are:
- Struggling with postpartum anxiety or depression.
- Coping with fertility struggles.
- Learning conscious parenting techniques to reduce problematic behavior in kids.
- Understanding and eliminating mom guilt and comparison.
- Reducing yelling or bribing as parenting strategies and replacing them with healthy parenting strategies.
- Learning to communicate with a partner about changes in responsibilities after a baby.
- Processing mixed emotions if learning to parent a child with special needs.
- Grieving a miscarriage.
- Learning how to co-parent after divorce.
- Breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma, silence, and dysfunction.
